My favorite review I got in a Northern Wisconsin bar about two years after the book came out.
A large man, whom I had met but did not know well, had been looking at me all night as though I had brought his daughter home too late the night before. As the evening wore on, I went to the bar and the only place I could get a bartender was in the back corner. The man cornered me there and started to speak.
“I bought your book” he said. I braced myself for what was coming next, expecting that I had somehow offended him or a family member with something in the book. He continued: “I have dyslexia, and it’s really bad. So bad that I have never finished reading a book in my whole life.” He looked down at the bar, somewhere between being ashamed and exasperated with the condition.
I was not expecting that.
He look up, cocked an eye brow back and looked at me again. “But I read your book. I forced myself to read it. I sat there for hours, then days, then weeks and I made sure I got every word right. I was so happy to make it all the way through, but it was so good, I just couldn’t stop!!”
I smiled and thanked him. If that wasn’t already the best review ever, he kept going. “When I got done, I just started over and read it again, then again, then again. I just wanted to thank you!” He shook my hand and walked away.
I did not get a chance to thank him properly, so I hope he read this now and understand how really amazing that was.
