Nick named “the professor” because he was attending college when he began his career at Polaris as a Starfire Kids, Stan Hayes won the grueling I-500 Winnipeg to St. Paul race in 1973.
Stan and Ski-Doo driver Yvon Duhamel are the only two drivers that have won both the I-500 and Eagle River World Championship.
Stan was also the 74 Sno-Pro high point driver of the year in 1974, and he won the Soo I-500 with brother Doug and Laverne Hagen in 1972.
He went on after Polaris to win multiple oval and cross-country races for Mercury, John Deere and Ski-Doo, then worked at John Deere until his recent retirement.
