THE PASSION, TRIUMPH, DOMINANCE AND TRAGEDY OF ONE OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL EFFORTS IN MOTOR SPORTS:
THE POLARIS PROFESSIONAL RACE TEAM

Starfire Kids Midnight Blue Express is the unauthorized and previously untold true story of the men and their machines from Roseau, Minnesota who rose to fame and fortune in the brutal, challenging and often very dangerous sport of snowmobile racing in the late 1960’s and 1970’s.

In 1956, there wasn’t much to do for fun in the far northern town of Roseau, Minnesota. That all changed when David Johnson built the first snowmobile at a little company called Polaris. As soon as David and his friends built a second machine, the racing began and it caught on like wildfire.

By the early 1970’s snowmobile racing was as popular in the snowbelt as NASCAR was in the south. Polaris won the lions share of those races, earning the nick name the Starfire Kids.

In 1977 a new breed of driver and machine stood on the shoulders of the Starfire Kids and set the racing world on fire, winning over 80% of all possible races. The press gave them a new nickname: The Midnight Blue Express.

The Polaris team dominated in an ever increasing fashion during those years when the sports popularity reached unimaginable popularity. But a tragic accident claimed the life of one of team’s brightest starts, ending it all in March of 1978.

Thirty five years later, the survivors who lived it opened up and told the real story of how an often under-estimated group of farmers, inventors and mechanics became the best of the best and are now among the biggest legends of the sport.

Until now, the fans never heard the true story of the team’s amazing journey to the top and the back story to the big events that made the Polaris racers true legends of the sport.
